  • Author: Julia Childley
  • Total Time: 1 Hour
  • Yield: 8 servings

Description

This savory sausage stuffing combines seasoned bread cubes, aromatic herbs, and hearty sausage for a classic holiday side dish. Perfect for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or any cozy family meal, it’s easy to prepare and packed with flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground sausage (mild or spicy)
  • 1 loaf (12 cups) day-old bread, cubed
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 celery stalks, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tsp fresh sage, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 ½ cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 4 tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until browned. Remove and set aside, leaving some drippings in the skillet.
  3. In the same skillet, sauté the onion, celery, and garlic until softened (about 5 minutes). Stir in sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine bread cubes, cooked sausage, and sautéed vegetables.
  5. Pour in the broth, beaten eggs, and melted butter. Toss gently to coat evenly.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the top is golden and crisp.
  8. Let the stuffing sit for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Bread tips: If your bread isn’t day-old, toast it in the oven to dry it out for better texture.
  • Make-ahead: Prepare the stuffing up to a day in advance, refrigerate, and bake when ready.
  • Freezing option: Assemble and freeze unbaked stuffing for up to 2 months. Bake directly from frozen, adding extra time as needed.
  • Variations: Add cranberries, apples, or nuts for a festive twist.
