Ingredients
- 1 lb ground sausage (mild or spicy)
- 1 loaf (12 cups) day-old bread, cubed
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tsp fresh sage, chopped (or 1 tsp dried)
- 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves (or ½ tsp dried)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2 ½ cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 4 tbsp butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat until browned. Remove and set aside, leaving some drippings in the skillet.
- In the same skillet, sauté the onion, celery, and garlic until softened (about 5 minutes). Stir in sage, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine bread cubes, cooked sausage, and sautéed vegetables.
- Pour in the broth, beaten eggs, and melted butter. Toss gently to coat evenly.
- Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the top is golden and crisp.
- Let the stuffing sit for 5 minutes before serving.
